SWESRS celebrates 60 glorious years

SWESRS AnniversarySWESRS (South West Essex and Settlement Reform Synagogue) is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2016.

Each month there are different celebratory events to mark this special year.

22 January – Friday night bring and share supper for all members, together with Tu B’shevat seder led by Rabbi Jackie, 6.45pm start, family friendly event suitable for all ages

24 January – Sunday – Tu B’shevat – Rabbi Jackie will lead the commemorative tree planting for the 60th anniversary, 2.30pm start followed by afternoon tea

20 February – 1950’s themed Shabbat morning service and Kiddush

28 February – Sunday Seeyum – this is a special event to mark the completion of our new Torah scroll; scroll signing, choral celebration, led by Rabbi Jackie. 3.00pm – 5.30pm with afternoon tea

23 March – Wednesday – Purim – Rabbi Jackie will read the megillah, followed by fancy dress competition, bring and share desserts buffet with hamentaschen, fruit chollah and not to be missed Purim spiel at 7.00pm

6 April – Wednesday – Cheese and Wine extravaganza – the Guild present a gastronomic feast of wine and vegetarian cheeses to please the palate and delight the senses – watch this space for further details!

9 April – 1960’s themed Shabbat morning service and Kiddush

8 May – Sunday – Guild Decades Supper quiz 7.30pm – 10.30pm with raffle

14 May – Shabbat – Yom Ha’atzmaut – Israel in 1956, followed by Israeli Kiddush

21 May – Shabbat – Commemoration of first ever Shabbat service of SWERS held in 1956

19 June – Sunday – special 60th anniversary Choir concert – 3.00pm – 5.30pm with refreshments

2 July – Shabbat – main 60th anniversary and 25th anniversary of opening of Prayer Hall –Shabbat morning service event with invited guests, SWESRS members, founder members and full Kiddush following the service

11 September – Sunday – Afternoon tea for Founder members, members celebrating 60th birthdays and 60th wedding anniversaries, event starts at 3.00pm

23 October – Sunday afternoon – erev Simchat Torah – to mark the dedication of our new Torah scroll, at 3.00pm we will process with the scroll from 112, Balfour Road where it all began 60 years ago, to SWESRS in Newbury Park. A full Kiddush will precede the Simchat Torah service, when we will read from our new scroll

13 November – Sunday – the Guild present a concert by “Performance” songs from the shows throughout the decades – 3.00pm with refreshments

27 November – Sunday – Decades Disco – 60th anniversary dinner and dance – food, fun music, memories and great company – details to follow

18 December- Sunday – final Chanukah event – chanukiah lighting, latkas and doughnuts, family friendly event 4.00pm – 6.00pm
