Sha’arei Shalom Synagogue in North Manchester are collecting pennies to raise both awareness of the Holocaust and money for a new Torah scroll for the community.
Synagogue member Emma Basger said: “It’s devastating that six million Jews died in the Holocaust, but how can anyone possibly comprehend such a unbelievably high number? As much as we try it is unimaginable. It’s our aim at Sha’arei Shalom to show what this figure would look like by collecting six million pennies”.
Contributions of pennies or other monies which will be changed to pennies can be made at the synagogue or online. When the target is reached there will be an event and a short film will be made to show exactly how much six million really is.
