Menorah; celebrating 60 years of a dynamic progressive community
In warm summer weather Menorah Synagogue kicked off their 60th anniversary celebrations with a Shabbat service on 17th June.
Elected only days earlier as Menorah’s Chair, Dr Laura Cohen MBE was delighted to welcome a packed congregation, “It was amazing to have so many people here who have played key roles in our 60 years as a vibrant community.”
A visibly moved Rabbi Fabian Sborovsky called Menorah’s previous Rabbis and teachers, all previous Chairs and recent Bnei Mitzvah to the Torah, with appropriate and, at times, emotional blessings for all.
Michael Cummings, 85, who joined in 1963 said “It has been amazing to see the growth of this congregation from our early days in the Friends Meeting House. I really enjoyed starting the choir when we worshipped in the old fire station.“
Kacie Breeze, 13, who had her bat mitzvah last year and was called to the Torah during the service said, “I love the community and how everyone has come together for the 60th anniversary.”
Paul Langsford, Co-Chair of the Movement for Reform Judaism added, “Menorah is a jewel in our crown, it was lovely to celebrate with this dynamic Progressive community.”
