A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami has hit the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. The death toll is over 800 with numbers rapidly rising. Over 150 aftershocks have continued to wreak devastation on the area with buildings collapsed and homes washed away. Search and rescue efforts are underway with thousands more people believed to be affected.
World Jewish Relief have launched an emergency appeal to support those affected. World Jewish Relief is the British Jewish community’s international humanitarian agency and Reform Judaism supports this appeal.
Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, Senior Rabbi to Reform Judaism, said: “Please give generously to World Jewish Relief in support of those who are suffering the effects of the terrible earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia. Our prayers say, ‘as God supports the needy when they call, may we respond with generosity and compassion.’ Let’s make these words real with our actions. We must respond to those who will need help rebuilding their lives and do all we can to alleviate their suffering and bring hope.”
