Tu BiSh’vat, the fifteenth day of the month of Sh’vat is one of four ‘New Years’ in the Jewish calendar. It appeared in the calendar as a point to calculate the age of trees, for determining when they could be harvested and when they were to be tithed for the Temple. It has become a time to think about trees and wider ecological questions and activities include planting trees, eating fruits, and having a Tu BiSh’vat Seder, a ritual that began with the kabbalistic masters of the 15th century.
