Rabbi Leo Baeck (1873 – 1956) was one of the foremost European Progressive Rabbis and scholars of the first half of the 20th century. He was born in Posen, Germany (now Poznan, Poland) and studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary of Breslau (now Wrocław) prior to teaching at the progressive Higher Institute for Jewish Studies in Berlin. During the Holocaust he represented all Jewish life in Germany. Following the war, Baeck lived primarily in London.
He became President of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Leo Baeck College, celebrating its 60th anniversary, is located at the Sternberg Centre in North London. LBC offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, including a five-year rabbinic training programme, as well as degree courses in Jewish education. The college has ordained over 170 rabbis who serve worldwide in the Liberal, Reform, and Masorti movements. NWSS’ next Rabbi, Kath Vardi, is in her final year at the College.
