More than forty years ago, the Chairman of Bradford Synagogue Dr Hans Librowicz, having recovered from an operation, donated a cover for the bimah in the synagogue.

Woven into it is a famous sentence from the Hebrew scriptures and the synagogue Torah service: ‘Eits chayyim hi la-machazikim bah‘; it is a Tree of Life to all who grasp it, ‘it’ meaning the Torah.

These words permanently face the congregation in the synagogue building.

In order to honour the memory of the 11 people murdered last month at The Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, the Bradford Synagogue has decided to call itself ‘The Bradford Tree of Life Synagogue’.

A letter will be sent to the Pittsburgh community together with a photograph of the inscription with President Rudi Leavor, son of Hans, and Jani Rashid, a member of the synagogue’s Council from the local Muslim community.
