Radlett Reform member receives Knighthood at Windsor Castle

Former Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman Robert Behrens was formally invested as a Knight Bachelor in a quiet ceremony at Windsor Castle, following recognition in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours. Sir Robert, a member of Radlett Reform Synagogue, served as Ombudsman from 2017 to 2024.

Speaking after the investiture, Sir Robert (pictured with his family) said: “Being Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman for seven years was both a privilege and a chastening experience. It involved investigating avoidable deaths and defensive cultures in the health service, and investigating the Windrush and Women’s State Pensions scandals more widely. All of this involved contact with bereaved and often traumatised people for whom the Ombudsman was the last resort.

“My parents taught me the importance of never looking for praise or limelight, so the Knighthood came as a complete surprise. I accepted it to say ‘thankyou’ to my wife, family, friends and colleagues for unwavering support through difficult times, and because the award is recognition for the Ombudsman community as a whole.”
