Radlett Memory Café serves hope and friendship

Radlett Memory Cafe

To mark Interfaith Week, Radlett Reform Synagogue and the local Christ Church celebrated the power of collaboration across faiths by building together something rather remarkable.

It all began over 20 years ago when Rabbi Paul Freedman was working with the then-local vicar, Reverend William Hogg, on Remembrance Sunday services. Together they created a truly inclusive interfaith service for the whole village – which is still unique in its approach today. The friendship of the two clergymen created several further opportunities for joint events, including mitzvah day initiatives and many study sessions.

When Reverend Hogg retired, the close friendship continued with the new Rector, Reverend Oliver Blease, and a shared vision developed to meet a growing need that was simple yet powerful. They decided to create a welcoming and supportive space for people living with dementia and their carers.

The result was the Memory Café – which offers families a lifeline through free sessions where everyone can share experiences, enjoy music and build friendships.

Rabbi Paul said, “The Memory Café shows what happens when faiths make a joint effort – reflecting the meaning of Interfaith Week. By working alongside people of other faiths it shows us just how much we share, in terms of compassion, care and community.”

Meeting every two weeks, the café is unique in its interfaith foundation. Sessions alternate between Radlett Reform Synagogue and Christ Church Vision Hall, with volunteers from both communities working together. Testimonials from attendees say it all.

“The Café has created a community. I’ve made friends here I never would have met otherwise,” said one. “I recently received a dementia diagnosis and the Café has been a sanctuary for me and my wife,” revealed another.

Plans are underway to expand from fortnightly to weekly sessions – reflecting both the café’s success and the growing demand from individuals and their families.
