Rabbi Adrian leads Merton Borough Council in prayer

Rabbi Adrian Schell of Wimbledon Synagogue had the honour to open proceedings at the London Borough of Merton Council meeting. The prayer and blessing he chose included a call for integrity, fairness, and inclusivity in governance.

In an inspiring address, he reflected on the essence of leadership, urging Council members to value every voice, particularly those often left unheard.

Rabbi Adrian (pictured second from the left) said: “May this chamber be a place where integrity prevails, where every decision is made with fairness, and where every voice is valued.”

Drawing inspiration from the week’s Torah portion, Rabbi Adrian reminded council members that true sacredness is not found in material wealth but in the contributions of people with open hearts.

He added: “May they govern with a spirit of justice and generosity, mindful of those who struggle, those who seek hope, and those who rely on their leadership to build a better future.”

Concluding his prayer, he also encouraged the Council to see Merton not as a collection of wards but as a united and interconnected community, where the dignity and aspirations of every resident has significance.

Rabbi Adrian an active faith leader and community advocate, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to share his words at the heart of local government.
