Why is life so often very hard and painful? Print E-mail

People have been asking that question as long as there have been people. Job in the Bible was struggling with the question two and a half thousand years ago. There are no easy answers. Some of us feel instinctively that much is down to how life and the world is and there is little point in blaming anyone, including God. For even God cannot change the is-ness of life and the world (is-ness: that is just how life and the world is). Whilst not everything in our world is explicable, we should never forget that too much of the pain is inflicted by humans on other humans. Where it is explicable, Reform Jews are committed to working for a better world, be it on the inter-personal, social or environmental level, to banish prejudice, hatred, disease and environmental destruction. What we would say is that our Jewish faith and culture gives our life, however difficult, a meaning and a purpose and the Jewish community provides a very special kind of care and support. Central to the Reform Synagogue are meaning and purpose, care and support.
