VIPs at the Reform Movement dinner: Reform Youth have their say Print E-mail

The Reform Movement has shown decisively that there are no voices more important than those of young people. At this year’s annual fundraising dinner at Lords Cricket Ground on 1 October, instead of the more usual ‘celebrity guest speaker’ the platform will be given over to younger members of the Movement and of RSY-Netzer,  whose lives have been touched by Reform Movement initiatives recently.

In keeping with the theme of Sukkot, seven people will play the roles of ‘Ushpizin’ (Sukkah guests) astonishing diners with a dramatic entrance into Lord’s Banqueting Suite. Each in turn will tell their story in their own words, in a specially-devised presentation staged by Ariella Eshed, Artistic Director of Tik-Sho-Ret Theatre Company, an Israeli theatre company based in London.

In keeping with the theatrical theme, Rabbi Dr Tony Bayfield, Head of the Reform Movement, in what must be a rabbinic first, will appear dressed in cricket ‘whites’ for the premiere screening of the latest Reform Movement film! The film makes humorous reference to the venue’s name and to the central place that both cricket and Reform Judaism occupy in British life. Rabbi Bayfield will take guard, middle and leg!

The Movement’s recently-appointed Fundraising Manager, Jim Fletcher, comments: “This unique approach to an annual fixture in the Reform diary reflects the creativeness of the Movement itself and its ingenuity in reaching Jewish youth and young adults.”

The presentation from the Ushpizin, together with a performance from the North Western Reform Synagogue choir, Pandemonium, will highlight the fact that the Reform Movement is actively touching Jewish lives today, in order ensure a brighter and more secure Jewish future for the whole community.
