London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, led London’s Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony at City Hall on Tuesday. He read a moving poem about the horrors of the Maidanek Concentration Camp.

The ceremony, which included testimonials from Holocaust survivors Trude Levi and Helen Bamber, took place in the Council Chamber with all the members of the London Assembly and Mayors from boroughs across London. Children from four schools, all participants in the Holocaust Educational Trust’s ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ course read statements of commitment to the eradication of anti-Semitism and racism.

Rabbi Dr Tony Bayfield, head of The Movement for Reform Judaism, who took part in the ceremony said: “This was a very appropriate and worthwhile event.”

Rabbi Barry Marcus, representing the Chief Rabbi, also took part. The JFS Youth Choir provided the music.
