The Movement for Reform Judaism was profoundly saddened to learn of the death of Rabbi Dr Louis Jacobs.

Head of the Movement, Rabbi Tony Bayfield, said: "I feel absolutely desolate. I received semikhah from three towering figures within British Jewry - Rabbis Hugo Gryn, John Rayner and Louis Jacobs. Now they have all left us. Louis taught me Talmud at Leo Baeck College. He was the greatest Jewish scholar whom I have had the privilege of knowing and learning from. I will remember him, of course, for the profundity of his scholarship but also for his honesty, integrity, personal kindness and sense of humour."

Rabbi Jacobs was not a politician who founded a movement but he inspired many people. His death comes shortly after the issue of a report showing that the Masorti, Liberal and Reform movements now account for more than 30% of synagogue affiliations in Britain. Rabbi Bayfield added: "We should use Louis' passing to recognise the breadth of his influence and work more closely for the good of British Jewry to which Louis contributed so much".
