dinner_resizedThe theme of ‘touching lives today for a brighter Jewish tomorrow’ made a significant impression on guests at the Reform Movement Annual Dinner, held at Lords Cricket Ground last week, with guests pledging over £200,000 – the highest amount ever raised at a Reform Movement event.

At this year’s event the platform was given over to younger members of the Movement and of RSY-Netzer, whose lives have been touched by Reform Movement initiatives for youth, students and young adults.

ushpizin_resizedIn keeping with the theme of Sukkot, seven young people made a dramatic entrance into the Banqueting Hall, as ‘Ushpizin’ (Sukkah guests). Diners were visibly moved as they told the story of their personal Jewish journeys, facilitated by Reform Movement programmes and initiatives.

One guest, Jennie King, a 16 year old member of Finchley Reform Synagogue performed a self-penned rap that had people clapping in time as she rejoiced about the egalitarian principles of Reform Judaism – “Phew! What a coup… we’re egalitarian!”

Another, student Rabbi David Mitchell, spoke passionately about his personal journey from growing up in the Orthodox world, to finding a spiritual home in Reform Judaism as a gay man.

Reform Movement head, Rabbi Dr Tony Bayfield commented: “Under the professional guidance of Ariella Eshed, these seven extraordinary young people engaged the audience in a palpable way. The money raised will enable us to reach out to more young people; inspiring them and strengthening their Jewish identity, to ensure a brighter and more secure Jewish future for the whole community.”
