An historic occasion in an historic setting

In 1655 Oliver Cromwell convened a conference of civic and religious dignitaries to debate the readmission of the Jews to England at the Whitehall Palace. Three hundred and fifty one years later, on November 16th this year, the Leo Baeck College will hold its 50th anniversary dinner at the Palace to celebrate its work of training rabbis.

Greetings for the success of the evening have been sent by HRH Prince Charles who visited the College in July last year and encouraged the continuation and development of dialogue amongst clergy of all faiths and especially those in training.

In the presence of Princes, Archbishops and Imams, the College will honour the memory of its founders and of its spiritual and intellectual leader, Rabbi Dr Leo Baeck who died the year the College was founded. Three eminent leaders of their religious traditions will address the most crucial question of our age: ‘What is the role of religion in this fractured world?' Rabbi Baroness Julia Neuberger, graduate of the College and former Chief Executive of the King's Fund will be followed by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu. HRH Prince Hassan of Jordan will respond to these issues in the light of his great work as an international Statesman and prominent Muslim.

With over 400 guests at the dinner, the College is seeking to raise funds to establish a faculty position in ‘Jewish Thought and Ethics' that would further the College's mission to ‘advance mutual understanding and respect amongst the Jewish People and amongst the religions, cultures and peoples of the world'.
