Following an invitation from Reform Movement Head, Rabbi Dr Tony Bayfield, the Mayor of London will be speaking at an event for Reform members to be held at the Sternberg Centre, North London, in May. Rabbi Bayfield met the Mayor, Ken Livingstone in November 2006 at a reception preceding the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Cenotaph. They discussed the difficult relationship the Mayor currently has with the Jewish community. Rabbi Bayfield invited the Mayor to the Sternberg Centre, offering him the opportunity to discuss his relationship with the Jewish community in London, as well as his attitudes to Israel, with members of the community. The event will be held on the evening of 29th May 2007 at the Sternberg Centre. It is hoped that Deputy Mayor, Nicky Gavron, and the Mayor will speak, followed by an extended question and answer session. Reform Movement President, Sir Sigmund Sternberg will host the event and the discussion will be chaired by Reform Movement Chair, Mike Grabiner. All members of Reform synagogues in the Greater London area will be invited, and other people who are interested can apply for tickets through the Reform Movement. Rabbi Bayfield commented: “it is significant that Mr Livingstone should choose the Sternberg Centre – Europe’s largest Jewish community centre – to address these important issues head on. We very much look forward to hearing what the Mayor has to say and to the opportunity for our members to respond and to raise concerns.”
