emma_senitt_smallEmma Senitt, a youth worker at the largest Reform synagogue in the UK, Edgware & District Reform (EDRS), has won the ‘Youth Worker of the Month Award' from the USA's Union for Reform Judaism. She was nominated for showing "commitment to youth despite coming to terms with a very personal tragedy" - the murder of her brother, Alan Senitt z"l, in Washington in July last year.

Jon Littman, Youth & Community Worker for the Movement of Reform Judaism, nominated Emma for the award. He said: "Emma is a dedicated youth worker. She has shown this commitment to youth despite coming to terms with a very personal tragedy. In July, her brother, Alan Senitt z"l, a very popular and charismatic community leader, was murdered in Washington, trying to protect a friend. Not only did she approach her bereavement with fortitude and tenacity, she continued to support, care for and work with the youth of her community throughout the summer. I wish to celebrate her courage and commitment."

Ms. Senitt has been working alongside Lisa Goldsobel as youth worker at Edgware and District Reform Synagogue since the summer of 2002. Since her early teens she has been volunteering at her synagogue as a leader at youth club.

She commented: "My favourite aspect of working with youth definitely has to be the fact that I feel I am making a difference and helping others develop and realize their potential. My favourite aspect of my job is training up young people aged 14 years upwards to work within our clubs and activities. One of my proudest moments so far has to be when we had a graduation for our Hadracha course in the summer of 2006. In conjunction with Jon Littman, we developed a 2 year Hadracha training course for young people at EDRS. At the graduation, 25 young people aged 14-18 completed their course after lots of hard work for 2 years.

Ms. Senitt devotes much of her spare time to developing and fundraising for the memorial trust dedicated to the memory of her brother, of which she is the Chair. The core purpose of the Alan Senitt Memorial Trust is to be a testimony to, and a perpetuation of Alan's life, work and aspirations for the benefit of future generations.

Bernie Joseph, Chair of EDRS commented: "Emma has shown commitment and fortitude in circumstances maybe others may have floundered. We are as proud of her at EDRS as you are in the USA."

The Trust also aims to facilitate sporting activities among disadvantaged youngsters; support those working and/or wanting to work in fields including youth and community work, and give financial support to Jewish students through their time of study. We will additionally be working with the metropolitan police to promote the awareness of the effects of street crime.
