Reform Movement President, Sir Sigmund Sternberg, was honoured on Tuesday night by the UJIA for 60 years' service to the people and the State of Israel.

Sir Sigmund was one of 10 key members of the British Jewish community to receive a 'UJIA Israel 60 Diamond Award'. The awards honoured people who have dedicated 60 years of their lives or more to providing outstanding and loyal support to the people and the state of Israel since its establishment. Each recipient received a personally signed certificate from the President of the State of Israel, Shimon Peres, which was presented to them by the Israeli Ambassador, Mr Ron Prosor.

Rabbi Dr Tony Bayfield, Head of The Movement for Reform Judaism commented:

"Sigi's contribution to the formation of the Palestine Appeal 60 years ago was characteristically prescient.Since then his involvement has been ubiquitous – from sharing the benefits of a metal and surplus war material business through philanthropy on a wide scale; from institutional support as a Governor of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem through to the formation of the first interfaith group in Israel, the Interreligious Coordinating Council (ICCI).

The consistent feature of 60 years of unremitting work and tireless support has been a focus on the need for people to relate to each other, to understand each other, to come together to seek justice and peace. That Sigi is still, in the second half of his ninth decade, energetically pursuing understanding and reconciliation in Israel as well as in Britain, is a testimony to a uniquely remarkable man. We in the British Reform Movement are enormously proud of our President and enormously proud that his contribution should be recognised and honoured.  It is because of people like Sigi that we are able to say Am Yisrael Chai!

The UJIA awards ceremony was among many events marking Israel's 60th Anniversary this year. To find out more click here.
