On Sunday 10th February 2008, South West Essex Settlement & Reform Synagogue (SWESRS) went up against New Essex Masorti Synagogue (NEMS) in the first of hopefully many, Inter Shul Fun Days.

This event was inspired by both SWESRS and NEMS. Back in 2007, both Synagogues thought that this would be a great opportunity for young people to represent their own Synagogue, meet new people and battle against each other in an afternoon of fun challenges.

The event was held in the SWESRS Youth Centre at 1pm on Sunday afternoon. Young people came from each of their Synagogues, wearing SWESRS and NEMS t-shirts that they designed themselves. The atmosphere amongst the two Synagogues was electric. What is truly amazing to see was that the young people are proud of who they are, their Jewish identity and the movement that they are affiliated to, be it RSY or Noam.

More than 30 young people from both Synagogues took part in the day and the feedback from the young people, parents and organisers was very positive. The winners of the day were Noam, who scored the most points throughout the afternoon. Recognition did go to the team that worked together and made a lot of effort during the challenges.

Each young person took home their own prize and the winners took home a trophy with will be engraved with their team name as this year's winners. Over all, the day was very successful and the extremely positive feedback suggests that this Inter Shul Fun Day will be the first of many. Hopefully next time more Synagogues will be inclined to take part. SWESRS will defiantly be back again next year to claim the Trophy!
