HUC-JIR honours Rabbi Dr Michael Shire Print E-mail

michaelshireRabbi Dr. Michael Shire, Vice-Principal of Leo Baeck College was honoured by Hebrew Union College this May with an honorary doctorate in Jewish Religious Education following 25 years of distinguished service to the Jewish People.

He is pictured (centre) with sponsor Dr. Jonathan Krasner and President Dr. David Ellenson. 

 

The citation for the award reads: 'The Faculty and the Board of Governors of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion have resolved to confer and do hereby confer the honorary degree of Doctor of Jewish Religious Education upon Michael J Shire-  innovative educator who, for two decades, has given of his heart and and mind to the Leo Baeck College in London, first as lecturer, acting Principal and now Vice-Principal, marking the emergence of this College as the premier center for Jewish leadership and learning in Europe, who as the chief Academic officer of the rabbinic seminary and Director of the Rabbinic programme of Leo Baeck College utilises his talents and creativity to build a vibrant center of study, whose academic appointments and prestigious honors in the area of Education manifest the respect he has received from his colleagues and who has published widely in the fields of spiritual education and creative liturgy sharing his expertise and passion with the world at large'.

Founded in 1875, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is the America's oldest institution of higher Jewish education and the academic, spiritual, and professional leadership development centre of Reform Judaism. The ceremony took place at New York City's Congregation Emanu-El.
