Newcastle JSoc celebrate IWD at Newcastle Reform Synagogue

To mark International Women’s Day, Newcastle University’s Jewish Society came to Newcastle Reform Synagogue (NRS) for a meaningful and hands-on challah bake-in.

The day featured an inspiring talk from Rabbi Sybil Sheridan, who explored the historical and modern role of women in Judaism.

This was an open event for both Jewish and non-Jewish students, many of whom commented on how much they had learned.

Newcastle JSoc President Eliana Stern said: “The event was a brilliant success! Not only did everyone leave with (a lot of) challah, but several people came up to me after we finished and told me they knew nothing about Judaism before and not only did they enjoy themselves but they learned loads.

“Events like these go such a long way to combatting ignorance and misinformation, and we’re so grateful to the NRS community for supporting this event.

Eliana added: “None of this would have been possible without the wonderful baked food contributions from members of the community, and the contributions of Linda Scott, Lesley Hagon and Rabbi Sybil Sheridan with organising and running the event on the day. A massive thank you to everyone involved.”

NRS Chair Linda Scott said: “It was a great afternoon. There was plenty of enthusiasm from the students and a lot of fantastic, delicious challah.”
