Jonathan Ornstein’s captivating career inspires Sha’arei Tsedek

Sha’arei Tsedek North London Reform Synagogue fell silent as Jonathan Ornstein shared his remarkable life journey with members. His story began in an Orthodox Jewish family in New York and led him to a kibbutz in Israel, service in the Israeli army, and eventually to Poland.

At the University of Krakow, where he taught Hebrew to non-Jewish Poles, Jonathan played an impactful role as the Director of the Jewish Community Centre (JCC) in the historic city.

In an event organised and hosted by Synagogue Manager Bonnie Lemer, Jonathan highlighted the significant discovery many Poles are making about their Jewish roots and their increasing reliance on the JCC for information about their heritage.

He also discussed the JCC’s ongoing support for Ukrainian refugees of all backgrounds since the war began, showcasing the centre’s assistance during this challenging time. He also noted the steady influx of Israelis settling in Poland since the 7 October terrorist attacks, which has introduced new issues and opportunities for the community.

Andrea Laurence, Chair of the synagogue, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you to Bonnie for organising such an informative and enjoyable evening and to everyone who attended.

“We are planning a trip to Poland in early October to visit Krakow, Auschwitz, and the JCC. Jonathan’s talk truly highlighted the resilience and strength of the Jewish people.”
