It’s a dog’s life as EHRS holds its ‘Bark Mitzvah’ service

Edgware and Hendon Reform members celebrated the Jewish New Year for Animals with a ‘Bark Mitzvah’ outside the synagogue building.

Fifteen dogs, their owner families, and 35 animal lovers took part in the service, which included moments of blessing for the gift of pets, appreciation for their companionship during these difficult times, and even a prayer of remembrance for the community’s beloved pets who’ve ‘crossed the rainbow bridge’.

Cantor Tamara Wolfson, who took the service, said it was a memorable and meaningful way to mark Rosh Hashanah La’Behema, the New Year for domesticated animals, which falls on the first day of Ellul.

Cantor Tamara said: “Our congregants and our dogs created a slightly chaotic yet sacred community where we honoured our animal companions and their roles in our lives. We are already looking forward to next year’s service!”
