German Ambassador meets Rabbi Adrian Schell to celebrate Jewish life

Rabbi Adrian Schell, the spiritual leader of Wimbledon Synagogue, was invited to a meeting with German Ambassador Miguel Berger at the country’s Embassy in London.

They celebrated the vibrant Progressive Jewish community in south west London and its significant role in wider society. Their conversation also touched on Europe’s political climate, the rise of right-wing parties and the importance of protecting democratic values.

Rabbi Adrian, who was born in Frankfurt, said: “It was a private invitation extended to me in my capacity as the ‘German rabbi’ of Wimbledon. I’ve always maintained a warm connection with the German Embassy, both during my time in South Africa and now again here in London.

“It was a pleasure to meet the Ambassador and to share insights into the life of our community. I deeply appreciated his interest in the work we’re doing at Wimbledon Synagogue and across the wider Progressive movement(s).”

Ambassador Miguel Berger echoed these sentiments on X, praising the synagogue’s “countless activities” and Rabbi Adrian’s leadership.

The invitation came after a Wimbledon member regained her German citizenship, part of Germany’s effort to restore nationality to families who had their status revoked in the Nazi era. During a conversation with the Ambassador, she mentioned Wimbledon had a German rabbi, and the personal invitation followed. Now further opportunities for collaboration between the German Embassy and Wimbledon Synagogue are being explored.
