musicA CD of music for the new Siddur was given to all who attended Conference 2008. Rabbi Sybil Sheridan has been involved in its production and asks 'Now we have a new siddur, what about the music?'

For the last eighteen months I have been visiting Synagogues, talking to choir leaders, Rabbis, cantors and musicologists to find out what is being sung and what could be sung in our services.  What I found was fascinating.  Our synagogues represent a true diversity of music in styles that range from the classic German Reform to modern pop.  Music from Israel and the US, music remembered by Iraqi, Indian and Yugoslavian grandparents, music culled from CDs influenced by the current interest in world music. The theatre is vast, the range infinite.  What is clear is that music enhances the spiritual potency of prayer and each community needs the resources by which it can develop a service most suitable for its members.

With this in mind, the Movement is producing a book and a CD of music for use in congregations.  The book will be out in the autumn, the CD was launched at Conference.  It contains some 24 tracks of music ranging from traditional nussach to newly composed prayers for healing and with lots in between.  All the tunes are easy to listen to and easy to learn.  Get a copy, learn the songs, bring them to your synagogue and intensify your religious experience.
