Mariage - 2008/02/04 22:50 Hello,

My father is a British Jew and my mum never converted. We were brought up with a sense of Jewish identity but never had any formal religious education.

In my teens I was drawn towards Judaism and spent time in Israel and learning hebrew.

Three years ago in France I met my future husband who is Jewish.

We are getting married this summer. I'm about to start a conversion process as I'm not considered Jewish by the religious authorities in Paris.

I would like to know how I would be considered in England and whether a Jewish mariage would be an option.

Thank you.

Re:Mariage - 2008/02/06 11:51 Hello Sarah,

One of our rabbis gave this response:

Mazel tov on your marriage and congratulations for finding time to do anything whilst trying to plan a wedding!! This is not the sort of question that can be answered with a simple yes or no. The Liberal Movement in Britain would look at your situation on an individual basis and would want to understand more about what it means for you to have a Jewish identity. It is likely that in your situation, through their understanding of patrilineal descent you would be considered Jewish. Although the Reform Movement does not recognise patrilineal descent and some sort of conversion process would need to be undergone we would indeed welcome you with open arms. The Reform Rabbinate in Britain would see your upbringing as a means of conferring onto you the Jewish status you already knew you had rather than a conversion from something else to Judaism. Good luck with your conversion process in Paris.
