Hello & Conversion - 2008/01/21 13:52 Hello, new person here! Just a quick question really, anyone got any advice on phoning up a synagogue regarding conversions? I'm not too good on the phone, I'm really shy so any advice would be helpful. Thank you

Naomi

Re:Hello & Conversion - 2008/01/21 17:24 Hi Naomi,

I too am converting and it took me a while to take that first step as i can be shy on the phone. But what i did was look on links and looked up the community closet to mine. I was put in touch with a rabbi who i will be meeting in just over a week from now.

I'm sure though one the very helpful people who run this site will give you lots of information.

Good luck

Tanya

Re:Hello & Conversion - 2008/01/21 17:49 Hi Naomi, firstly welcome and remember it's quite natural to feel nervous. Making this first step is possibly the most daunting of all and I'm sure you're not alone in feeling anxious.

It might be helpful to do some on-line research first; find out a bit more about the community and the rabbi you are approaching. This might make it easier to start the conversation as it is less of a step into the unknown.

And just be yourself, that's the most important thing.

Good luck!

Re:Hello & Conversion - 2008/01/21 18:53 Thank you for replying! I've got a book on the jewish faith as a whole, the anita diamant (think I spelled that right!) book for converts, had a million out of the library and exhausted the internet! I'm just terribley nervous! Tanya what did you say/ask when you got in touch with whoever put you in touch with the rabbi?

Re:Hello & Conversion - 2008/01/25 14:19 Hi Tanya,

It is great to read that you have found a Rabbi and things are progressing for you. I sent you a few emails after you mailed me but I haven't heard from you,did you receive them? Anyway, I too have spoken with a Rabbi, he seems lovely and very welcoming, I hope to be meeting with him as well in the next few weeks. I have been doing loads of book buying and reading, ther is so much out there! Good luck and stay in touch, it would be nice to start to build a support base.
Warm regards,
Ashleigh

Re:Hello & Conversion - 2008/01/25 14:23 Hi Naomi,

I too am just starting out, and you are right, it can be daunting. I rang my local synagogue- which happens to be Orthodox-and was terrified! In the end I decided that reform was for me and here I am. Good luck with your journey and keep posting!
Best wishes,
Ashleigh
