Who is a Jew? - 2007/10/11 14:40 Shalom,

My father is from a Jewish (Ashkenaz)family but changed his name because of persecution during the war to hide his Jewish ancestry. Now in his old age he is revealing this to me (oy!) My mother was not raised Jewish and all we know is her Grandmother's name was Gold which may be Jewish but we cannot find record of her.

I realise in orthodoxy I am probably mamzer because I cannot prove matrilineal descent but what of reform? Am I still considered Jewish. I was not raised in any tradition because of my fathers fear of persecution. I married a non-Jew not realising my descent. Am I Jewish? What of my child? My son wears peyos and calls the name of G-d as Ha-Shem. He does not believe any Christian tradition. He upholds the first commandment. Do I tell him he is not Jewish and cut his hair?

Re:Who is a Jew? - 2007/10/28 15:13 Yes you would be considered Jewish in reform circles, as would your son.
