The occult. - 2008/01/11 03:11
I was thinking about this recently and realised that I have no idea what the "official" Jewish view on this subject was. I know that we are forbidden by the Torah to try and contact spirits and that sort of thing and that people who tried to do witchcraft were sometimes executed.
I personally find that sort of thing really creepy - stuff like ouija boards and obviously the whole idea of trying to contact the dead and get them to do what you want them to do and that sort of thing, like it's the sort of thing that really can mess around with people's heads psychologically. I think its forces that we don't really understand and don't really want to go around messing with unless we really know what we're doing so it's really better we don't.
What is Reform Judaism's view about this, because I've rarely heard it being mentioned by anyone to be honest, whether they're orthodox or reform. I know it's prohibited in the Torah to invoke the name of a deity apart from God but does this apply to spirits of dead people and that sort of thing? And how does Judaism's view of it relate to stuff like the Kabbalah?
I don't know if anyone is around so on the off chance that they were I'd really like an answer to this because I've been thinking a bit about it recently - although I'm not about to get into it so don't worry
