Sabbath? - 2007/08/29 01:40 Hello all,

I've been seriously considering conversion to Judaism. In total, for about 5 years, but only very seriously for about 6 months. I have not contacted a Rabbi yet as I am moving in a few weeks and would of thought it much more sensible to wait and make contact with a Rabbi in my new area.

However, I do have one question that some of you might be able to help with and let me know if I'm totally wasting my time before I waste that of a Rabbi's too.

I'm a full time student and therefore work on a Saturday at the moment.

I understand that work is not permitted on the sabbath in Judaism, however, I read on a few websites - although I cannot vouch for any of their integrity - that this is much more relaxed in Reform Judaism?

If I HAD to give up my job I would, however, I absolutely love it and hardly see it as work at all, and would much prefer not to. I also study until 8pm on a Friday evening, which again clashes with Sabbath and would make me unable to attend any services either on a Friday night or Saturday morning or afternoon.

Like I said, I'd give it all up to convert if I really had to.

But does even considering it make me a bad Jew already?

Re:Sabbath? - 2007/09/02 18:15 I wonder now, is it time that I give up. All four of the synagogues and Rabbis I have approached have either not replied at all or told me they are not interested in discussing conversion.

Re:Sabbath? - 2007/09/03 14:29 Hi Daisy,
I'm really sorry you haven't received any response from anyone.
Unfortunately it's the Rabbis busiest time of year as all the High Holy Days are about to start so everyone's pretty rushed at the moment.

I'll make sure someone replies to your post, but it may take a while.

In the meantime please feel free to contact the Sylvia at the Beit Din (020 8349 2568) if you have any questions on Conversion.

Best wishes

Marc.

Re:Sabbath? - 2007/09/03 16:24 I'm not sure where you live or who you contacted but I would suggest you try contacting one of the Synagogues from the list at the link below if there is one near you.

You should then be able to meet with someone who will be able to give you some advice and answer any questions you may have.

A period of study is usually required and this does involve regular synagogue attendance. This is a vital part of becoming Jewish so if you do have flexibility with your schedule I would try and make time for Saturday morning services at least.

Good luck!

Re:Sabbath? - 2007/09/03 23:41 Thanks for the replies. I actually got a reply from one Synagogue today and we had a short chat about my current circumstances etc.

We've decided it's best that I attend services when I can for now, and get involved at the synagogue in other ways - oh and I've been given a reading list too - with the idea of formally starting conversion once I can rearrange things, which I think will be in a few months time.

I actually guess this works out quite well as it gives me chance to get a taste of things, for want of a better expression, before I start anything formally, by which time I'll hopefully be even more keen and confident in my decision.

Re:Sabbath? - 2007/09/27 22:39 Going to my first service very soon and the synagogue have arranged for someone to accompany me so I dont feel so much like a fish out of water. Looking forward to it but a bit nervous. Not sure if there are any rules about dress etc
