Growing Cardiff community welcomes Board of Deputies President

Cardiff Reform Synagogue was the latest stop for Board of Deputies President Phil Rosenberg, as he visits Jewish communities across the UK. His trip was marked by warm welcomes, topical discussions and a dive into the rich history of Judaism in Wales.

Phil – along with the Board’s Community Engagement Manager Sara Radivan – met with key members of Cardiff Reform, including BoD representative Eddie Cawston, and remarked on how impressed he was by the growth of the community.

He said: “I loved learning about the proud history of the synagogue – including its heritage from the war and its preparations for Pesach. Incredibly, the number of conversion candidates since the atrocities of October 7th could see community grow by more than 10%!”

Speaking on that growth, Eddie added: “We now have 17 people in two conversion classes. Three-quarters of them have Jewish heritage. The arrival of so many new people has given a lift to our whole community, and they bring much new energy, talents and diversity.

“I’m sure that in future they will make a big contribution. Their average age is about 30 years younger than our current average!”

Discussions also touched on combating antisemitism and promoting peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians, reinforcing the synagogue’s commitment to fostering understanding and unity.

Phil and Sara also met with other Jewish communities across Wales, championing Welsh Jewish culture and strengthening ties between local and national Jewish organisations.
