The last month or so has shown an interesting snapshot in the life of the Reform Movement as viewed through the work of the Head of the Movement, Rabbi Dr. Tony Bayfield.
On Yom HaShoah he contributed to the annual service held at the Holocaust Memorial in Hyde Park and participated in the large communal commemoration at Logan Hall. On Yom Ha'atzmaut he and Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks both spoke at the Zionist Federation reception at Wembley Arena. The UJS revised their Haggadah before Pesach. Not only does it bear the logo of Jeneration, the Movement-backed initiative for Jewish young adults, but the Haggadah also contains a short essay by Rabbi Bayfield alongside voices from across the communal spectrum. He has also featured in listings of the influential in publications as diverse as the Jewish Telegraph and the JC, coming in at number six of the JC's Power 100. Rabbi Bayfield was also present at the Assembly of Rabbis welcome for the new Siddur; whose publication has been greeted by wide-spread media coverage. Last week he joined with other religious leaders and Prime Minister, Gordon Brown in greeting the Dalai Lama at Lambeth Palace. This snapshot over just a few weeks gives an insight into Rabbi Bayfield's role as Head of the Movement, representing the Movement at the very highest level in a wide variety of cross-communal institutions.
