Miriam Kays, immediate past Chair of Bournemouth Reform Synagogue, tells us more about the re-dedication Shabbat for Bournemouth's 60th Anniversary...
After an early (from 8am) start for the ladies of the BRS Guild preparing the wonderful Kiddush to be held after this special Shabbat service, members started to arrive.
Eve Cowan and her flower arranging class had done us proud with their floral offering. Brian Cowan had carved an impressive “60” to background the main display and we were all most impressed.
All our guests then came in through our doors and were received by Hon. Chairman Ron Rosenfeld, Miriam Kays immediate past Chairman and others. They were duly shown to their reserved places and their accompanying members.
Rabbi Tony Bayfield Head of the Movement for Reform Judaism together with David and Mrs Jacobs and Mike and Mrs Frankl had travelled from London to be with us and were warmly welcomed.
Cllr Ann Filer Mayor of Bournemouth and her Consort Cllr Michael Filer were greeted by Hon. President of BRS Walter Kammerling.
At the beginning of the service Professor Ruth Soetendorp gave a message to the congregation from Rabbi David.
Rabbi Neil and Student Rabbi Jenny Amswych together with Rabbi Bayfield then proceeded to conduct the Shabbat service.
The special tallit bought by the L’Chaim team was then displayed by four of our “tall” members, the four scrolls carried by Sue Heringman, Walter Kammerling, Ron Rosenfeld and Richard Inverne, after standing at the four corners of the Tallit then proceeded around the sanctuary for all to witness.
The specially devised rededication service conducted by Rabbi Neil then continued with the four scrolls repeating their procession before returning them to the Ark. Rabbi Bayfield was invited to present the Sermon and which was extremely well received.
The Shabbat service then continued with Cllr Ann Filer presenting a topical Dvreih Torah. Rabbi Neil gave a meaningful Sermon following the Torah readings by Student Rabbi Jenny.
Various members were honoured with an Aliyah or a Mitzvot and these included some of our members celebrating their 60th birthdays this year.
The finale came to this special anniversary Shabbat with a wonderful Kiddush so ably prepared by the Guild and a vote of thanks to all our guests and members for their attendance by Hon. Chairman Ron Rosenfeld.
